This iconic hotel was opened when king Alfonso XIII considered, in the early XXth twentieth, that Madrid was a village-like spot and needed a hotel with glamour and a bit of dignity, to rival with the ones in Paris and London. Under the supervision of the prestigious Cesar Ritz, the famous parisien hotelier, the opulent Madrid Ritz opens in 1910. They used the very best to decorate it. Real Fabrica tapestries, Limoges porcelain, palatial decorations, Goldsmith silver.
Since then it has been the meeting place for celebrities, politicians, businessmen and wealthy tourist. Whether you are able to affoard sleeping in it or not, nothing is more civilized than tea time in the “old way”, at the Lobby Bar. If the place is beautiful, elegant and decadent, the event is “adorned” with classical piano tones, and harp melodies. Don’t hesitate to go there. It is served between 16:30 and 19:30 (rather late compared to the British tradition), and the whole experience will match any “high tea” enjoyed in the most luxurious London hotels lounges where the best of society meets to socialize and sip tea with exquisite sweets.
Always using premium porcelain brands, fine linen, tablecloths and polished teapots; teas from selected brands, ranging from the subtle Orange Pekoe, to the strong and distinctive Earl Grey. Don’t miss sweets. They serve a wide selection of very “British” pastries. Salmon, cucumber finger sandwiches, the very famous scones (of course with strawberry jam and clotted cream), or homemade cakes like the Fruit one.
A full gourmet dining pleasure. We may live in a pragmatic world, where these traditions are sometimes considered superficial and even stravagant, but these ceremonial events are an exquisite experience. Timeless and civilized.
Tea is served between 16:30 and 19:30. Price per person about 32 €, 10% VAT included.
